DREAMING OF ANGELS / SOÑANDO CON ANGELES - POR, BY CARLOS MIJARES POYER. DEC. 2020. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

-DREAMING OF ANGELS-

The apocryphal thought of the Bible burning

But did you at least turn the pages?

A jester coughing blood unto the pallid snow

and the archangels with black hair awestruck, descending

never the vultures so close, white snakes in beaks,

warbling

or are they people in the new garden

looking for food in trash bags

like poor Santa Clauses under broken street lamps

I dream't of you, and died…

Dark Moon to the South

by Carlos Mijares Poyer, (c)copyright, May 22, 2016, Carlos Mijares Poyer.

The fanning continental avenues where wind breathes good moods
The Latin river silver the Anaconda watching you in the night
and the red-haired bats with faces
The size of tigers hang from the trees to jump you.
Who said Vampires only lurked in Gotham?

The Phantom Rolls-Royce purple immaculate
Races opening the wounds of poor pedestrians
To the height and apogee of slums in
The Lost Metropolis of silent windowpanes.

The Beauty Queens of the hip that stole erotika
In your reverie of desire, and the rich laugh
At high decibels of hysteric desperation
To market the Red Scare and the Eagle’s Dare!

This Smile has no horizon, it is in the heart.
The giant rodent Chiguires the size of baby pandas
And the coral reefs of your spine
Of multifoliate shades of blue ocean in your eyes
From snowy sun to wet leaf,
The humid smile intonates candy-colored tones
On the marimbas and Salsa falls to your laps
Like a dead pearl necklace unleashed...

Soon, after the rain the city’s mountain runner
Smiles again
As the traffic jam issued the last gun shot
To vacuum your soul like the last sigh
Of a Spanish poem.
These in the last gaze of the Caribbean Sea.

glossary: Chiguire is the Venezuelan name for Capybara, the largest rodent in planet Earth.

As Simple as Death / Tan simple como la muerte (proema)

AS SIMPLE AS DEATH

I wish I could have predicted free-will
like the splendor of fire-flies
...the abject abyss
of florid stairwells

I wish time had elapsed
to find truth forgiven
and convex eyes in blue
oceans of gaze
across urban panoramas
and sleights of rapid eye movement
I dream...

Cannot forsake emotion
as a dire fiord
of mirrored walls
tenements of canyons
in the heart of human passion

And the petals
like ears listening
to poetry
and the stars developed
a film of fantasia

TAN SIMPLE COMO LA MUERTE

Ojalá hubiera podido predecir el albedrío
como el esplendor de las luciérnagas
el abyecto abismo
de escalinatas floridas

Desearía que el tiempo pasara
para encontrar verdad perdonada
y ojos convexos en azul
de océanos de miradas
a través de panoramas urbanos
y fotografías de movimiento rápido
de los ojos durante el sueño

No puedo perdonar emoción
como un acantilado nórdico
de paredes en espejos
edificaciones de valles
en el corazón de la pasión humana

Y, los pétalos
como oídos escuchando poesía
y las estrellas reveladas
como película
de fantasia

THE GENRE OF A SCREAM-EL GÉNERO DE UN GRITO-proema

The lipid jet airliner crossing the sky
like a jailbird forgotten
the drum-roll of Sun
and the snare drum roll of miniature para-diddles of colors
vast unleashed freezing magic

"Scream", said the Priest.

The beast will leave you
like a cinematic alien
leaving your entrails
to decor those white cotton bed sheets

It was all a dream of Stars

in a night that harbored no tomorrow
no tomorrow

the end was no tomorrow

EMPORIA (The last verse of an abstract tale)

By Carlos Mijares Poyer

The hyper-bollixed and incandescent humongous mutation of a dream,
Whereas solitary firefly falls to the waters.
The cascade of the brittle rose flowers
Last floating petals forgotten
By mist and demeanor
As in a maze of open reality,
Where no eyes have gone before
To steal the fathomed sigh of
New angst and the breathless
Pleasure of a dark abyss.

I bid you welcome Emporia
Of perched soiled portico columned houses
White wood in arid sun, lost starlight
And poppies in your heart flagellating
Desire as wishes and these as lost hopes.

Articulate tenements NO VACANCY signs buzzing in dying neon light
Of quark infrastructure as tear of mercury
That perils from your retina’s facade
Like a new mask,
Like the gate that holds no return even for the wise
For you or for me, we are one
In the forked road, open
To the new herbicides in the dew
Of crowned ferns and wisterias
Surrounded by more mankind.

I sit in the soft sofa of your legs
Like a crying clown, erased make-up
Of wet eyes blinded by all scientific.
Your star, your onyx rosary,
Your spectacles shaded like a tie-dye shirt
Open at the neck to reveal that pale throat
That will cut from heaven with iconoclastic words
Sung like a bird.

The surgeon will save you,
The amontillado wine will battle you
Like the lucid masculine liquids of the stars,
Flares of eyes with no pupils, stares and circular gazes
And yes, those quiet screams.
I am no white dwarf star; I am just short-lived, shining
In this last moment -immaculate.

This garden, this one drawn
Is Emporia
The inverted pyramid of your tears
As landscape and the desperado’s escapade
The musical on stage of only sound and stage scenery, vacant
For your fastened soul, a voyage to reality and away they say...
To the authentic footprints of mirage in urban laberynths
And eyes on and from a chanting crowd.

Before you spill shadow
Welcome to the Emporium
And gimmick of roses
In this your last stage
Your thought processes as whims
And the circumstance of theorized by the Spanish philosopher
Which names your imagination
At mid-century.

I come now to this rain forest
As a noun and place at your verb’s wants
Hurts feet to menace evil with wild kicks in a back seat
From the platitudes
From the South American Lost World of the immense Tepuys of Canaima;
Hollow plateaus you carry as burden
The quakes of your dignity.

The Sunrise they yelled sore of gargantuan overtones
Not a musical myriad of chess pieces
In the vast heel of the universe
Divided to cry, only to whimper and make no sense
Like a petal
The idiom and nomen inside the ear-drum
Of your own form as content
To say: “EMPORIA”!!!

The open mountain and the entering double-helix helicopters
Your chest unearthed to breathe,
As you relate
As you relate
As you give in to immortality.

Gaze in the french garden
You had desire to be a last child
Given as astronomy of foliage
To your heart’s beat and open wounds digitally scarred
Thus is the healing of the new global shaman
In the oldest of continents unseen
The continent redeemed
Of possible blanche islands and heroism to their history
From the deserts to castles you
You are no hero, just a blast from
The outcome of a secret web maelstrom
Where flowers withering converse, converge to enhance
And the sky dips its lips beyond the waters, ecstasy...
Yes, the waters of gesture upon the kryptonite rocks
Your path to that other garden
Where no one listens
Just prays,
Just like this,
Like this...
And, like this, take the money and hum...

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

I HEARD THIS WORD "BOLLIXED", IN CAPE COD, MASSACHUSETS, IN HYANNIS, SAID BY AN IRISH YOUNG MAN FROM KERRY, IRELAND, WHO WAS SPENDING THE SUMMER THERE WORKING IN A CANDLE FACTORY. I ASKED HIM WHAT IT MEANT AND HE COULDN'T ANSWER. THAT WAS THE SUMMER OF 1986-87. THE TERM HAS REMAINED WITH ME FOR DECADES AND IT IS INHERENT IN THE ORIGIN OF THIS POEM, EMPORIA. I WAS IN HYANNIS PLAYING FOR THE HYANNIS LACROSSE CLUB WHERE I EXCELLED, PLAYING ON MY TEAM ATTACKMAN JIM NELSON OF U.S.A LACROSSE TEAM, OTHERS I ENCOUNTERED FROM LACROSSE TEAMS LIKE U. MASS., HARVARD LACROSSE TEAM, AND MANY OTHERS. OUR DEFENSE WAS COMPOSED OF CARLOS MIJARES POYER - RIGHT POST DEFENSEMAN, YOGI TAYLOR - CREASE DEFENSEMAN, AND PETER BOURQUE, LEFT POST DEFENSEMAN, ALL OF US THREE FROM GUILFORD COLLEGE LACROSSE TEAM RANKED 6TH IN THE NATION AT THE TIME, WITH JOE SAVARESE ALL-AMERICAN ATTACKMAN.

That Young Man-proem

WINNER OR LOSER-WE WILL NEVER

BY CARLOS MIJARES POYER (c)copyright2008, february 23. Caracas, Venezuela. 11:26 p.m (the year of the rat).

THAT YOUNG MAN

He spoke beyond his possibilities
entertaining the aloof and evil imps

He rose like a tall flower
and said nothing
nor was erased by time and space
as is usual

His lady lovers talked of him
made no clearance of biography
or much less a type of passion

his family disclaimed like others
professed to ignore quite subtlely
his intimate desires

he passed through the stars
like burnt Sun
whose wind, solar, had closed its eyes
like a child dies much to soon
for the regret of many
who never saw the flame in his eyes

ORGANIC / ORGANICO

ORGANIC  /  ORGANICO

The body's imperfection
masquerade of roses
the soul's precision
only spirit know's it

Create your own world
like the Gallow in a Glass bottle
floating astray across oceanic skies
and tepid backgrounds

limitless your stare
is unbelievable in the same star
of eyes
and your lips surround immensity

THE PRESENT BOUTIQUE OF THE SUBLIME

THE PRESENT BOUTIQUE OF THE SUBLIME

The limpid star jet airliner crossing the sky astray weeeee
like a jailbird forgotten
the serious drum roll of the sun
and the para diddles of colors in an invisible rainbow
open to freedom.  Freezing magic.

"Scream", said the Priest
the beast will leave you dancing down the stairs wild
like a cinematic alien,
leaving you in entrails
to decor those white cotton poplin bed sheets grandma's gift.

It was all a dream of stars and adult toys of turn of the century hedonism
in an inherent night that harbored no tomorrow
no tomorrow.

So many, pop goes the weasel, imitate your smile
in the loneliness of your bathroom mirror, you are here to stay
wary of deceit and new hellos

So many stereotypes, so many.. like apple pie
as many as keys on a typewriter
now the keyboard and chess piece of life like no other
the other brother, the smile of my mother,
my father's eyes
and the tarot-like mysterium in my sister's
sigh.

I cry
loud a siren's hell, the fire in the inner ear
the falling rosary beads in a white wet sink
forever speechless

Reckoning to applaud like a french marionette, this sense
the sensibility as common as the clown's chat
behind the red suede curtains
now on fire...

now on fire. The house is on fire...

THE NAKED WILLOWS (AMIDST THE SILENT OCTOBER MORNING)

THE NAKED WILLOWS (AMIDST THE OCTOBER MORNING)

Tearful rains in high ground
amidst the silent October morning
passion sifted through the trees
the poet's heart repelled.

A flutter of leaves and Puritan prayers
the lonely beings gathered mortal
questioned by spontaneity
at dawn's last hour.

A walk brisk by the spring
as into a brook desired
the pebbles that trickled like thoughts
as now cold wind of angst
brittle small hands and flowers
amidst the October morning.

The pedantic ocre bloom'd
across the bridges
and the walk resumed
as once upon a times
amidst an October that was mourning.

And open silence pallid falls to rest
amongst the lake shores inhaled
a counterpoint of voices swelled
like the whale's scarred back
derives the presence of mystery token
as from curious child-like eyes peek
through a broken leaf

and shout to the languid mother
in cinematic amazement, the management,
oh the management, how to discover dimensions four fold
nestled in the utter of autumn mo(u)rning.

A run against the wind
screams stabbing face, face stabbing horizons
the pang of heart beats like a machine, oh a machine
a bee sting and a red beetle lost
are the unknown dream at daybreak, daybreak.

The struggle of everything, all that is a thing in your dream
perned anatomy in subtle shift, the statue's lean
like Fragonard trees in a distance
of us, you and I
in no hurry

the learn'd stars
of a knitted sky
perhaps offering origins and the orgasm of clouds
immense
askance the end of a long farewell.

EL PRIMER POEMA PERDIDO, THE FIRST LOST POEM

ESCRITO EN LA HABANA, CUBA 15 DE MARZO DE 1993, TODOS LOS DERECHOS RESERVADOS POR CARLOS MIJARES POYER.

-POEMA PERDIDO-

Había hablado de un indio
jefe acostado a lo largo de
una pradera de Las Carolinas.

Había hablado de tríbus de
bohemios compartiendo marihuana
y cigarrillos enrollados entre
sus sucios dedos.

Pero, de todos aquellos solo queda
este tenue poema de esperanza
porque ha podido ser
una felicidad luminosa
que se refleja como un pensamiento
que cae como el pétalo de
una musitada rosa.

Y, los que se han perdido
han vuelto a mi en sueños
y surreales pesadillas en el
augur de las más pálidas
madrugadas.

Porque ningún poema se ha
perdido mientras palpite
la memoria de la humanidad
y el nombre de las cosas.

written 1993 in Havana, Cuba. Inspired by the poem by the same author The Indian Lies Still, inspired by a landscape over the tree tops and the sky at dusk off the soccer field at Guilford College 1984 to 1988, read to the students in a poetry reading at the college in 1988.

"FIRST SONG" BY CHARLIE HADEN, POEM BY CARLOS MIJARES POYER 1993. JAZZ

-"FIRST SONG" (JAZZ STANDARD BY CHARLIE HADEN) POEM IN ENGLISH BY Carlos E. Mijares Poyer
-FIRST SONG-
I came when the open door
hurried shadows as a beginning
and the sudden glances that insued
brought fame to a silent moment.
This jazz is the same
as my heart's careful song
of imperious insistence
Come look away...
The mind's origin is in a solo portrayed
the time stretches and reels
near behind you
and dares not touch you
afraid of you and of the end
Come look away...
I will not shatter your space
like a butterfly the surface cold wet
settlement of ideas as waterways
that flow carelessly into the ocean.
Enter and look around
the distance is indeed your distance
and your love is the witness
of that same distance
between death as your idea
as birth as your idea
the unbreakable,
and that idea of an imperturbable
waterfall that propels
your animated wishes
where you look away and arrive,
alone with the rest of your life.
